Joint Admission Test for M.Sc - JAM 2017

Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) is conducted every year by consortium of IITs to ascertain merit of the candidates to provide admission into Integrated Ph.D. programs offered at IISc, and M.Sc., Joint M.Sc. – Ph.D., Dual degree M.Sc. – Ph.D., M.Sc. – M.Tech. and post B.Sc. programs offered at  IITs across India. JAM is open to Indian and foreign nationals and candidates appearing for JAM have to match minimum educational qualifications and program requirements of the specific institution to get eligible for admissions. JAM is the litmus test to the undergraduate students seeking admissions into higher degree programs offered at prestigious institutions which are positioned as institutes of national importance.

IIT Delhi, the organizing institute of JAM 2017, has notified that the last date for online applications through JOAPS has been extended and will be accepted till 5:00PM on 13th October, 2017.

JAM conducts exam for seven papers covering disciplines Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. Candidates can appear for a maximum of 2 papers and exam is scheduled to be conducted in a single calendar day. JAM 2017 is to be conducted by IIT Delhi on 12th February 2017 for the academic year 2017-18.

Eligibility

Minimum eligibility qualifications & requirements for respective course offered at various IITs and IISc may differ from program to program but general eligibility requirements are as bellow.

  • All the candidates shall hold a bachelor degree from any recognized university
  • Candidates shall pass the qualifying exam with a minimum of 55% aggregate in all the subjects from all the years without rounding off.
  • Candidates appearing final year of qualifying exam in the admission year and whose results are expected before last date of admissions.

Exam pattern

JAM is Computer based test conducted online for all the 7 papers and candidates have to answer on a computer screen. A total of 60 questions carrying 100 marks have to be answered within duration of 3 hours. Exam paper consists of 3 sections containing questions of MCQ, MSQ and NAT type questions.

Section –A contains MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions) type questions where each question will have 4 options with single correct answer. Within a total of 30 questions in the section, 10 questions will be carrying 2 marks each and 20 questions will carry 1 mark each.

Section-B contains MSQ (Multiple select questions) type questions which are same as MCQ with one are more correct answers. Section contains 10 questions carrying 2 marks each and candidates will be awarded with full mark to the question if he/she able to identify all the correct choices.

Section-C contains (Numerical Answer type) NAT questions where candidates have to type a number at space provided using the virtual key board. In this section a total of 20 questions with 10 questions carrying 1 mark and other 10 questions will carry 2 marks.

Negative marking

In the JAM test paper only section-A will be having negative marking and 1/3 of the marks (1/3 for 1 mark questions and 2/3rd a mark for 2 mark questions) will be deducted for wrong answer. No partial marks will be awarded for questions which have more than one correct choice in section –B.

Rank and Merit list

Rank list will be declared for each test paper and an All India Rank will be assigned to every candidate appeared in the JAM exam. Merit list for every test paper will be prepared based on the All India Rank and number of people included in merit list will depend on the seats availability for the academic program.  A separate All India Merit List will be prepared for each of reserved categories. A score card containing All India Rank and marks obtained will be released for every candidate and will available for download from the JAM website.

Admissions

Candidates whose names are placed in the merit lists can only apply for the programs offered in the IITs and IISc . Minimum educational qualifications and eligibility requirements of the institutes vary from program to program hence candidates are advised to refer the institute admission outlines to apply to the appropriate course cum institution. JOAPS will undertake admission process and all the admissions are based on merit obtained in the specific paper and options exercised by the candidates. Online admission form will be available on the JAM website once the admission schedule is announced.

JAM 2017

JAM 2017 will be conducted by IIT Delhi and exam is scheduled to be held on 12th February 2017 in 2 sessions. JAM 2017 will be conducted for 7 test papers in online mode and duration for each test paper will be of 3 hours. Candidates willing to apply for JAM 2017 will have to apply online on IIT Delhi website and online application will be available from 2nd September 2016 and one can apply till 6th October 2016. Exam is scheduled to be conducted on 12th February 2016 in 2 sessions.

Online Application

Candidates seeking admission through JAM 2017 have to apply online only.  JAM online application process system (JOAPS) will be available from 5th September and one has to do one time registration to complete the application process.

A onetime registration can be done providing a valid E-mail address and working mobile number. Candidates can set the password during the registration. Upon successful registration JAM enrollment id will be sent to the mail address and mobile number provided during registration.

Filling the application

Candidates can login using enrollment id and password, and need to enter the details such as parents name, mobile number (parents), test city choices, number of test papers willing to appear for, DOB and communication address.

Candidates have to fill the information related to educational qualifications, percentage of marks, and details of valid personal ID.

Documents required for uploading

  • Soft copy of photograph as specified (only JPEG format is allowed)
  • Scanned image of signature
  • Soft copy of  other documents(who claim SC/ST/PWD reservation)

Upon successful uploading of documents a review option is available to review and edit the information furnished in the online application.

Fee payment procedure for JAM 2017

A final submit button will be available and after the final submission of application no changes are allowed. candidates are navigated to application fee payment window where fee payment for JAM 2017 can be done only online. Candidates can pay the fee either using credit/debit card or through net banking. After successful fee payment through online a fee payment number will be generated which should be saved for future purposes.

For general and OBC candidate Rs 1500/- for 1 test paper and Rs 2100/- for 2 test papers

For female and SC/ST/PwD candidates Rs 750/- per 1 test paper and Rs 1050/- for 2 test papers

Admit cards

JAM 2017 admit cards will be available for download from 10th January 2017 and candidates have to carry the print out of the admit card along with valid Id (same which is mentioned during filling of application). Candidates have to check the information provided in the admit card such as test center, test paper codes, name, registration number photograph and signature. It is advised by the JAM authorities to the candidates that they should preserve the admit card till the admission process completes.

JAM 2017 Examination Cities

JAM composed 8 test zones and test cities with codes are available in the respective test zones. Candidates can go through the brochure to select the appropriate test city and a total of 63 test cities are available across India.  Candidates are allowed to make maximum of 3 choices and first 2 choices will be within the same test zone. Change of test city will not be allowed unless candidate claims with a valid reason for the test center change and same to be intimated to JAM 2017 office before 28th October 2016.

Exam will be conducted on 12th of February 2016 in 2 sessions.  First session will be from 9:00am to 12:00 noon. Session 2 will be conducted from 2:00PM to 5:00PM. Test papers conducted at session wise as bellow.

JAM 2017 Results (All India Rank list and Merit List)

Candidates appeared for the test will be allotted with all India rank list and subject wise merit t list will be published on 27th March 2017. Merit list will be prepared on the basis of seats availability and candidates can download the score cards from the JAM website which contains All India Rank(AIR) and marks obtained.

JAM 2017 Admissions

Admissions will be handled by JOAPS and online admission window will be available from 12th April 2017 on JAM website. Candidates whose names are in the merit list are only eligible for admissions and one can submit admission form till 25th of April 2017. Total 3 rounds of admission list will be released and admission process will be completed by 7th July 2017.
